    2011 - 09.08

If you are a rebel, jester, believer, thinker or curious planetary citizen, check out our concept for a game of debate and social values.

    strategic update

    2011 - 02.20

    Ideas are flowing.

Cash is staying ahead of credit bills.  Student loans have enjoyed low interest rates since I finished school.  The job is secure, though not very exciting.

    Considering a table purchase. June 3/4 http://socialmediacamp.ca/sponsors/sponsorship/

I’ve been hanging out with some really cool game designers.  Maybe we’ll split on the table and then we can have some demos next to my slide show prototype.

Working on a 30 second prezi.

Wanting to buy 25 or so domains for A-Z testing. :-) Q = http://www.questioncollector.com Getting a quote from my local host.  Who I am going to talk to about design for a logo, maybe with webpage.

Planning contest. Part-time web developers coding contest. Win my personal trove of board games and a share of the action.  Flash? Java? Django? Other? I don’t care we just a need team of two to win and work with us for the summer.  Sticking with our core values: freedom, fun, and peace. You must be willing and able to party, hear Imagine and actually Imagine what he describes, believe in freedom, even before you believe in democracy.  If you want to be a customer, that would be a great start.

Politics is long overdue for an upgrade. Are you ready for borderless debate? Mob fights with no weapons, but words? Gladiators go to battle, the Emperors decide their fate? Emotional ranking and filtration. The game begins.

    idea wave!

    2010 - 05.24

I just applied to this cool conference in Victoria called Idea Wave.  It’s on July 10-11, 2010.  Here is my application to speak for 10 minutes about the QuestionCollector.  By the way, I’ve been trying to think of a better name for the product.  Maybe PeaceQuest? (the domain is for sale, but I can’t afford it yet.)  Would love to hear your ideas for a name.

    Title:
A value centered social game for questioning everything.

    Talk Abstract:
A text-based social game for online debate.  We want your questions, the ones that burn
in your identity.  The ones that move you to action.  The ones that make you burst into
laughter.  We want you to gather with people and organizations of similar values and form
questioning communities.  We want to serve your debates, and opinions in a fun and
neutral sandbox where you control your identity.  Most of all, we want you to feel
empowered to share your vision. (more…)

    the listening machine?

    2010 - 04.20

I dug this out of my archive. I liked the pictures I used. Isn’t BC beautiful? Anyways, this is from a Toastmasters speech I gave in July 2009, and it covered some of the basic problems I’ve been approaching. I want to thank Victoria Beaver Toastmasters for cheering me on. They seemed to think I was going to be rich someday. I don’t know if they were right. I think I’m already rich and I sure don’t have any money. :-) I just want help building this thing, so I can play it and see if games really can change the world.

I think I’ve done two full iterations of the design and talked to at least seventy-five people directly about it since then and most people are really enthusiastic. I’ve only had one person say it was a terrible idea on a blog comment, I asked him to find others to berate me and stop me from going ahead, but he said it would only take one person to stop a bad idea. Anyone else think that is slightly illogical? I want war to end. Did it work?

I also want to thank Allen for coming up with this draft tweet for entry into a US contest I can’t enter. “Engage politically disenfranchised with online game which displays consolidated opinion and fuels sponsorship of political clarity #100KTwitch” It’s nice to know that someone out there is reading my blog and getting a clear picture of what it would look like to them. Any other enthusiastic readers interested in this game? I want to stress this is a text based game, not video, and not 2d graphical, but still a game with actions to take, an exciting ladder to climb with your friends, and nifty rewards to earn. I would love a set of comments saying “I am interested” or even better “I’ll do everything in my power to stop you, even if I have to do it alone!”.

Love your enemies! Thanks for reading.

    seminars and pitch update

    2010 - 03.04

Over the last two days I attended two seminars at the local technology park.  One was on product positioning and marketing and the other was on intellectual property and business structure.  Both were useful and it was good to get out and meet some local entrepreneurs.  Thanks to Gowlings and VIATec for hosting!

Here is our current positioning statement:
The QuestionCollector is a sociopolitical game of debate, for Internet users who want to create peace with words instead of weapons. It provides a fun and neutral architecture for questioning everything. Unlike current social  games the QuestionCollector is fun AND useful to your world.

Read on for the draft text of my media pitch and let me know what you think of it or my positioning statement.

    First Pitch: failed, sorta

    2010 - 02.04

Today I gave my first pitch to a panel of local business people, who screen pitches for a local angel investor network.  I prepared my 12 slide 10 minute presentation up to the day before.  It wasn’t glitzy, but I thought it presented my business case at the conceptual level.  I had no expectation of succeeding out of the gate, but I had a hope that I would get some solid advice on what to do next.  I ended up getting most of my advice from myself, in hindsight.  I definitely got a good dose of external advice, as well. Even if it came with some laughter at my expense.  Lucky for me being laughed at is something I’m good at receiving and it actually fuels me more than stops me.

I had sent in a business opportunity document, that they used to brief themselves.  I wasn’t thinking clearly when I filled that out, and had sent in some answers that could easily be considered a joke.  This was correctly interpreted as ego, and at least one of the panel had been looking forward to meeting it.  I showed up with my ego in check, already expecting to be a bit of a face plant.  The advice I got about “showing ego to investors is: they will slam the door in your face”.  They laughed about it, and so did I.  I’m very aware of my ego and have plans to put it to good use, but I need to be more strategic.  I have some taming left to do.  Part of my strategy for working on this is publicizing my failures, I hope you enjoy this one as much as I did.
